Abstract

This study aims to explore the integration of educational science and philosophy in the context of Islamic educational modernism by referring to the Al-Manar commentary, a monumental work in the study of tafsir written by Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida. Islamic educational modernism, which emphasizes reform in the approach to education and Islamic thought, requires an in-depth understanding of how educational science and philosophy interact and shape the paradigm of contemporary Islamic education. In this study, a qualitative analysis approach is used to evaluate the key concepts outlined in the Al-Manar commentary, as well as to understand how Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Rida apply educational and philosophical principles in their commentary. The main focus of this study is to identify the philosophical and pedagogical elements that underlie their views on modern Islamic education, and how these elements form the basis for broader educational reform in the Islamic context. The results of this study indicate that the Al-Manar commentary not only serves as a rich source of tafsir, but also as an intellectual platform that unites the ideas of educational philosophy with Islamic principles. Concepts such as rationality, progress, and educational reform contained in this commentary provide important insights into how Islamic education can adapt and develop in the modern era, without losing its traditional roots. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how the integration of educational science and philosophy can enrich and modernize Islamic educational practices, as well as offer new perspectives in the study of Islamic educational commentary and reform.
